Dear Reader,
One floor below Bluedotβs Marketplace editor Elizabeth Weinsteinβs apartment in Manhattan lives Taylor Telyan. Taylor, who offers βvisible mendingβ workshops, would be a perfect candidate to be a Daily Dot climate champ, Elizabeth told Dot. So I reached out to Taylor to find out what, exactly, visible mending is, and how sheβs putting her sewing skills to work for good in the world. |

βI am a tailor primarily focusing on repair and customization, with a specialty in denim,β Taylor said. It feels as though sheβs been doing this forever (in a good way!), Taylor told Dot, but she really only got serious about it in the past two years, going full-time about eight months ago after offering a workshop at a denim trade show. βAt the time,β Taylor says, βI was working as a print designer for a super fast fashion brand and hating it, trying to figure out what my next move would be.β When Taylor was let go, she took it as a sign and decided to dedicate herself to tailoring and repair. |

Mending is about intentionally making something whole and useful again, she says, noting that, historically, we mended because we had to β βit was a natural part in extending the use and life of things.β Taylor reuses scraps to reduce waste. βI save hems I get from work and turn them into keychains, old bandanas become patches, and anything I don't know what to do with gets donated to my mending clubβs scrap bin where it hopefully becomes the perfect patch for someone else.β
She wishes more people either got their clothes mended or did the job themselves. Mending, she says, offers far more than just replacing a button or zipper. Itβs about art. βWhether you're trying to conceal the repair, or deliberately leave it visible, mending is an artistic choice, a political statement, and an act of love all at once. We put so much time, money, and consideration into our clothes, why not keep them alive, tell their story of how they've been worn?β
A hurrah to you, Taylor, for making things useful again, for extending the life of clothes, and for stitching beauty into each garment.
Sewingly,
Dot |
