Dear Reader,
Gift-giving season can be a fraught one for us conscientious consumers. On the one hand, we are all too aware of the impact of our culture’s voracious consumerism on the planet. On the other, we exist within this culture and delight in giving gifts that make our loved ones’ lives easier and better. And so we embrace Bluedot’s Buy Less, Buy Better mantra — curbing our consumption and sticking to products that are made ethically and with better-for-the-planet materials.
And so it is with genuine glee that I introduce Dot’s Twelve Days of Giftmas, where I will choose a dozen lovely gifts for this holiday season and share them with you. It’s a chance to show off our new store, The Bluedot Living Collection, and an opportunity for all of you to support companies and products that underscore your values.
You might ask why we bothered to create our own store. Isn’t there already enough shopping in this world?! I’ll let our Marketplace editor, Elizabeth Weinstein, explain: “We created The Bluedot Living Collection to help our readers easily find both practical sustainable necessities and unique, beautiful gifts in one place. In my three years reviewing sustainable products for Bluedot, I've seen plenty of stores that do one or the other well. But I can't think of a single store that does a great job doing both. We’re hoping that our new shop will help fill that gap. I’m thrilled with what we’ve got so far, and because we’re adding new items often, I think it’s just going to get better and better.”

What does Dot have for you on Day 1? Let’s begin with one of Dot’s favorite things in the world: socks!! Remember the days when a pair of socks lasted until you outgrew them? I wish that it didn’t knock my socks off to learn about an apparel maker paying a living wage, but alas, it’s definitely the exception rather than the rule. And it should be celebrated!
