Dear Reader,

“Zipping through the skies over South Africa, a 1,300kg (2,865lbs) horned herbivore is dangling by its feet from a helicopter,” begins a BBC story. The horned herbivore in question is a critically endangered black rhino. The helicopter is a former war machine that translocates these rhinos across Africa in order to create new populations and ensure genetic diversity, and to evade poachers.

Tranquilized black rhino is transported by a helicopter to evade poachers in Eastern Cape province, South Africa.

Black rhinos are hunted primarily for their horns, which are used in traditional medicine mostly in Asia, but also as symbols of status and wealth. The World Wildlife Fund tells us that, between 2008 and 2021, more than 11,000 black rhinos were poached in Africa.

But today, helicopters expedite tracking of some of the rhinos, allowing researchers to quickly access a sedated rhino to gather biological samples for testing. The rhino is then fitted with ankle straps and airlifted, unconscious, to a new site. Formerly, a rhino needed to be awake to be walked into a crate for transport by road — a long, arduous, and more dangerous trip.

This Feel-Good Friday, let’s give thanks for the repurposing of a Vietnam War helicopter to ensure the long-term survival of Africa’s black rhinos.

Propellingly,

Dot
