Dear Reader,

Chestnut trees were commonplace in American hardwood forests until early in the 20th century, when blight took out roughly 4 billion of the giants, decimating the population. And while there have been attempts to restore the species, they’ve largely failed. That is, until recently. Scientists and researchers are hopeful that a project rooted mostly in New York will restore the American chestnut.

The project was established by none other than The Rose herself, Bette Midler, who founded the New York Restoration Project to enlist New Yorkers in planting blight-resistant chestnut trees to reestablish the hardwoods throughout the city and around the Eastern U.S. (New Yorkers who want to get involved can reach out here.)

The response has been overwhelming, which is generating a lot of excitement and hope. Plantings are coming from the American Chesnut Society, which also delivered seedlings to Martha’s Vineyard, as chronicled in this Bluedot Field Note

Who knew that Bette Midler not only could belt out an old chestnut, but that she’s saving them, too?

Tunefully,

Dot
