Remember the last day of school when you were, say, 10? Running out the door and basically spending the summer outside? In the decades since, childhood has increasingly moved indoors. Bluedot contributor Jana Studelska writes: “When asked how she would design a school, [a Wisconsin] 10-year-old said, ‘We have to learn about trees, lichen, and flowers, and seeds, and clouds. … Kids need forests and things to climb.’” Read about how city leaders in Madison, Wisconsin, are making this happen with their Nature Everywhere initiative.

“Nobody can embargo sunlight. No cartel controls the Sun. Its energy will not run out. It will not pollute the air; it will not poison our waters. It’s free from stench and smog. The Sun’s power needs only to be collected, stored, and used.”

Jimmy Carter, in a speech delivered in Golden, Colorado, on May 3, 1978

It was pouring rain the day that President Carter delivered those words from a federal solar research facility on a day he declared Sun Day. Carter shared a vision of a future in which solar power — “we know it works,” he pointed out — supplanted much of our fossil fuel energy.

We know what happened next, and it wasn’t Carter’s golden dream of cheap, clean energy. At least … not until recently. Now, however, though fossil fuel hasn’t vanished (not by a long shot), we’re seeing entire countries powered by the sun and wind, we’re watching the cost of solar energy plummet, and we’re wising up to Carter’s warning that a select few countries can exercise power over us as long as they have something (oil) that we need. So while we’ve lost crucial time in scaling up solar energy, Carter’s vision is finally being realized. So let’s rejoice as we celebrate the summer solstice today — the longest day of sunlight in the Northern hemisphere. It’s high time we harnessed that energy.

Move It!

moving house on the wheels

Over the past few years on Nantucket, more than 17,000 tons of construction waste has been shipped off the island each year. That’s a lot for a small place — there are about 13,000 units of housing on the 50-square-mile island. Construction waste in landfills is a huge driver of climate change (never mind the carbon impact of hauling all that stuff to the mainland via trucks and ferries). Local organizations on the island are attacking this issue in several ways. Some are moving houses from one plot to another instead of demolishing them, so that someone can give the structures a new life. Some are cultivating the art of deconstruction, and others are looking to create salvage businesses.

Inside each issue of Bluedot Living Kitchen, you’ll find fresh cooking inspiration for planet-friendly eating, waste-saving tips for a more sustainable kitchen, and inspiring stories of the people who grow and make your food. In the latest issue, you’ll find tips for growing hearty herbs you’ll actually use, dozens of seasonal recipes, low-waste tips for campfire cooking, and the story of the third-generation farmers behind the regenerative Happy Hens Farm.

Dear Dot: How Can I Prepare to Evacuate With Pets?

A Favorite Read: The Serviceberry

Dear Dot,

I’ve been reading about all the wildfires and been thinking of people evacuating with pets. I have a German Shepherd named Remy. I’ve never experienced an evacuation but want to be prepared. What’s your advice?

– Mikki

Dear Mikki,

At one stage in Dot’s life, there were eight animals living under our roof — three dogs, three cats, a rabbit, and a guinea pig. Our household is now down to a much more manageable five (two dogs, three cats). But how manageable would that number of animals be if we had to suddenly pack up and evacuate our home? That, Mikki, is a darn good question, so thank you for it.

The Keep-This Handbook

Tired of your old nail polish? Host a swap with friends! Or use it to help organize keys (a different color for each door) or to brighten up office supplies, like paper clips. If it’s truly beyond use, Bluedot’s Guide to Getting Rid of (Almost) Anything reminds you to treat it like the hazardous waste it is.

Where We All Come Together

Readers of Bluedot (and thank you all!) can trust that we all have something in common: We care enough about each other and our planet to want to tap into solutions to protect it. We may know we’re not alone, but often we don’t realize that loads of others feel like we do, or we assume — based on the slow-as-molasses policy around climate issues — that we’re in the minority. But researchers at University of Bonn, Germany, set out to determine just how many people around the world want to see more action taken to address climate concerns, and they came up with a surprising data point: Globally, 89% — almost nine in 10 human beings — want their governments to do more to tackle climate change. And about two-thirds are willing to contribute 1% of their income. In other words, welcome to the vast majority!

89% project

Recent pro-democracy rallies are the evidence we need that there is strength in numbers. That when we come together — united by our desire for a safer, fairer, cleaner planet — we are unstoppable.

Enjoy the weekend, and we’ll see you in two weeks.
