Dear Reader,
You might recognize today’s Climate Champ — or at least his outfit — by the cape that he wears. Seventeen-year-old Rudiyansah (he, like many Indonesians, goes by one name) often helps his father — who set up a volunteer firefighting team — battle wildfires after school in his home region in the Indonesian section of the island of Borneo. And this past summer, Indonesia, like so many other places around the world, had frequent wildfires. But it wasn’t until Rudiyansah donned a red-and-blue Superman costume (along with a gas mask, you can see a photo here) that he went viral, earning thousands of accolades, along with praise from his country’s forestry minister, who called him a “forest hero.”
Like most heroes, Rudiyansah is humble, telling a reporter that, “Honestly, I’m really happy because I can help locals, even though it feels really tiring.”
