Dear Readers,

When I was five, well before the 9/11 era, I flew from Los Angeles to New York by myself. My father walked me directly to the gate, and a flight attendant took me on board. I don’t remember much about the flight, but I know that I wasn’t afraid and I didn’t cry. I do vividly recall seeing my mother waiting for me on the other side. Triumphant, gleeful, I ran toward her. She captured a photo of me on the jet bridge the moment I saw her, and you can see that I’m positively bursting with pride. I was wearing my favorite outfit: a bright red sweatsuit from Gap Kids. In it, I felt invincible.

If you thought it wasn’t possible to look great in a sweatsuit, think again.

Although we weren’t a family that went in for matching outfits, my mother also owned a red Gap sweatsuit. Unlike me, she’d finished growing, so her sweatsuit outlasted mine by many years. By the time I neared high school, I was begging her to get rid of it. “No one wears those anymore!” I remember whining to her. “That outfit is so embarrassing.”

If my mother were still alive, her outfit would be back in style. As with so many trends from the ‘80s and ‘90s — think shoulder pads, puffy sleeves, bike shorts, scrunchies, and fanny packs (aka “belt bags”) — matching sweatsuits are, once again, de rigeur. Despite my past protestations, I’m happy about it. This is clothing that’s practical, comfortable, and can be surprisingly attractive.

Today, you can find a matching set that offers the feel of a sweatsuit but looks more put together — even flattering. This is loungewear. You can sleep in it or work out in it if you choose, but it’s primarily intended for well, lounging. These clothes, which come in a wide variety of silhouettes and materials, are also called “co-ords” — that’s Gen Z speak for a matching top and bottom.

However you refer to the items I’m featuring today, you can rest assured that they’re all made by brands that prioritize sustainability, and that you can find something that will look great on you. You can wear your set to work from home, walk the dog, shop for groceries, get brunch … anything you choose. Of course, clothes like these always feel perfect on a flight.

Happy lounging and happy shopping!
