Dear Reader,

β€œIn a landmark advisory opinion …, the International Court of Justice (ICJ) said countries must prevent harm to the climate system and that failing to do so could result in their having to pay compensation and make other forms of restitution,” reported The Guardian on July 23.

Supported by 130 nations and led by a group of youths from Vanuatu, a low-lying Pacific Island, the ICJ decision called for every state to curb domestic and corporate emissions, aid vulnerable countries, and hit the 1.5Β°C target or face legal breaches and damages. And the court rejected arguments from Australia, the U.S, China, and Saudi Arabia.

While the court can’t force nations or corporations to pay reparations, the decision nonetheless draws a line and, for now at least, public opinion matters, as does international law. This decision will certainly raise the stakes at the upcoming COP30 in Brazil (from which the U.S. will be absent).

Kudos to the young people fighting for their (and our) future.

Resoundingly,

Dot
