Dear Reader,
It’s Feel-Good Friday, and Dot is here to tell you that Chonkasaurus’ appearance in the Chicago River a couple of years ago was viewed as a positive sign that the notoriously dirty river was getting cleaner. (Chonkasaurus is a massive snapping turtle that dwarfs his fellow snappers.)
Turns out that Chonk knew what was up. The river was cleaner, thanks to the cleanup crew and the hard work of Friends of the Chicago River, who’ve been toiling since 1979 to address the filth from more than a century of dumping industrial waste and untreated sewage.
In fact, in late September, the water was clean enough that swimmers got the green light to dive into the chilly waters for the first time in a hundred years. Brrrr! … but also, hurray!
