Dear Reader,
We frequently hear about animals on the brink of extinction β including Black Rhinos, Bornean Orangutans, and Amur Leopards. But though Dot doesnβt want to minimize the threat theyβre facing (and remember: the loss of any species can have devastating impacts), a new analysis considering rates, patterns, and causes of recent extinctions across the plant and animal world finds that species loss actually peaked roughly a century ago. Whatβs more, weβre told, most of those extinctions were species that lived on islands and were wiped out by invasive animals, such as rats, pigs, and goats.
Extinction threats today are more likely to be related to habitat loss on continents, though, so comparing historic losses to current or future extinctions might be comparing apples to oranges.
But warnings of a Sixth Mass Extinction might be unwarranted, as the data indicates that extinction rates arenβt occurring at the same rate as historic die-offs, thanks to conservation efforts (including laws), protected habitat, control of invasive species, and the growing trend of rewilding.
This is not an invitation to be complacent, but rather an exhortation to double down on our efforts, because they appear to be working.
Some examples?
Rare porpoises have been spotted off the coast of California.
Green sea turtles have been saved from extinction.
The worldβs first shark rewilding program is showing promise.
And the Eastern Australian humpback whales have bounced back beyond pre-whaling population levels.
Good news for all of these species! And for those of us who love them.
Thrivingly,
Dot
