Buzzing With Purpose

San Diego beekeeper and businesswoman Hilary Kearney found her entomological passion by accident. But the hallmark of any successful person is to jump on opportunities with passion and flexibility. She’s expanded from honeymaking to education, writing, social media, bee merch, even bee rescue. Of her actions and advocacy for the bees and the natural world, she says, “I really think there’s a ripple effect that happens. ... The more that you do, the more that you can inspire others to do.”

In our By the Yard series, garden expert Laura McLean compliments SoCal gardens that serve as examples. This yard uses native plants to provide great habitat while still being low-maintenance and beautiful. Then, even though they’re not native, our local parrots (and parakeets) are generally welcome settlers who may be the salvation of their species.

Dear Dot: What Causes So Many Stars?

illustration of woman writing

Dear Dot,

I was on an island off the northeast coast of the U.S. in late October and, one night, I noticed that the night sky looked different. I don’t remember ever seeing so many stars, and I’m someone who tends to look skyward a lot. Are stars brighter at that time of year? Was there some celestial event? Did I imagine it?

– Dorothy

Dear Dorothy,

Phil Plait, an astronomer and science writer, marvelled at your luck, which he suspects was a combination of being in an area with low light pollution plus “no moon, clear air, and low turbulence in the air,” leading to your ability to see far fainter stars. There are steps we can  — and should — take to eliminate light pollution, as truly dark skies are increasingly threatened. …

Outerknown Sweatpants

We love Outerknown for their high-quality, thoughtfully constructed garments that are designed to last a lifetime. Editor Julia Cooper recently gifted her partner a pair of their Sunday Sweatpants when their furnace broke and he (unconvincingly) insisted that sleeping in jeans was perfectly comfortable. They’re heavy-duty, plush, and just tailored enough to convert a particularly stubborn sweatpants skeptic. Shop today or read more.

Numi Teas

A warm cup of herbal tea is a delightful way to wrap up a long, stressful day. Numi Teas are all USDA Organic, Fair Trade or Verified Labor Certified, and their whole operation is Climate Neutral Certified. With countless varieties to choose from, it’s easy to become a part of the Numi “communitea.” Shop today or read more.

ThriftBooks

Limiting screentime before bed is a great way to improve your sleep hygiene. Instead of scrolling through your phone checking emails or social media before your head hits the pillow, pick up a book! ThriftBooks’ enormous library is packed with affordable options, like Bluedot favorite read How to Do Nothing. Shop today or read more.

Pact Pajamas

Pact partners with Fair Trade USA, Global Organic Textile Standard, and SimpliZero to ensure their products and processes support both people and the planet. Their organic cotton loungewear makes for the perfect pajamas. Shop today or read more.

Taking Care of Turtles

saving turtles

The Aquarium of the Pacific is one of the only institutions in SoCal with the veterinary staff and resources needed to take in, treat, and rehab sea turtles. And they’re expanding their turtle facility with a new 4,000-gallon enclosure specifically for sea turtles. It’s expected to be complete by late spring. Writer Bella Arnold takes us behind the scenes with our chelanoid-saving heroes.

In a Word: Inosculate

tree

A few years ago, a ranger in Sequoia National Park described two close-growing giants as “sharing bark” when they grew large enough to fuse together. We smiled, thinking how well it described us as a couple. The science-y word for this is inosculation, and it goes much deeper than just bark: It’s “a fusing so complete that the organisms don’t exist separately any longer, but become a sort of hybrid new organism.”

Natives of Earth

Humans are a very successful species, able to live in any environment on Earth. Unfortunately it’s often at the expense of the other species that live in the same places. But it doesn’t have to be that way. Beekeeper Hilary Kearney reminds us to be respectful of even the “gross” bugs we encounter. Gardener Laura McLean helps us to plant native plants to provide better habitat for local wildlife. The Aquarium of the Pacific helps injured endangered turtles. With a little tolerance, parrots that struggle in their native habitats find refuge in new places. It doesn’t take much to live in harmony with nature, it just takes a will to do so, and a little thought.

We’ll see you in two weeks.
