Dear Reader,

In Manhattan, there stands a tree, a majestic elm, believed to have sprouted decades before George Washington’s inauguration at the city’s Federal Hall in 1789. Most Manhattanites stroll past the leafy giant, largely unaware of and unawed by its age and beauty. Which is why Tree Wonder launched a program inviting people to free drawing sessions at the tree, hosted by local artists, with materials provided. Sadly, the fall session ended yesterday, but it will start up again in Spring! Of course, most of us who don’t live in NYC (and even those who do), don’t need a formal program to appreciate the beauty of the natural world around us. But we might need some encouragement to start capturing it in art, so: pick up a pencil and a pad of paper, get outside, and start sketching! Maybe it’s a late-season songbird on a branch (Audubon offers help) or the outlines of a foliage-free maple, or even the first snow on a conifer. Inspired by Tree Wonder, let’s look at our world through fresh eyes.

And while we’re re-evaluating neighborhood trees, let’s add the following to our long list of reasons why trees are cool. A new study shows that Amazon rainforest trees have a remarkable ability to generate rainfall, even during the dry season. As the study’s authors put it, β€œspecifically during the dry season … the forest rapidly recycles the rain: it falls, infiltrates shallow soil, is absorbed by roots and is released back into the atmosphere, fuelling new rainfall β€” right when the forest needs water most.”

Sketchily,

Dot
