Dear Reader,

From 1948 to 2001, what the Fresh Kills Landfill was famous for was trash β€” 29,000 tons of it daily at its peak. And all that trash wasn’t just stinky and horrific to look at; it also affected Staten Islanders’ health. So they fought β€” successfully β€” to shut it down. But who could have dreamed that a quarter century later, that unsightly heap of trash would become a park that is soon to be home to 50 thousand flowers to lure bees and butterflies to the site. It’s a Feel-Good Friday reminder that it’s never too late for environmental transformation.

And more Feel-Good Friday news came from a Daily Dot reader named Debbie, who wrote to tell me about her delight at getting her garden certified by the National Wildlife Federation. She learned about the Gardens for Wildlife program at her local library and her farmers market in Washington, New Jersey. She just needs to add a birdbath, she reports, and then her certification will be complete. Check out Debbie’s gorgeous garden β€” home to morning glory and lavender (she puts it in her Earl Grey tea), hummingbirds and butterflies.

Thanks, Debbie, for sharing your gorgeous garden and your Feel-Good Friday news.

Certifiably,

Dot
