Dear Reader,

Misinformation around renewable energy abounds, but perhaps more than other renewable sources, wind turbines have been unfairly vilified. While offshore wind is growing in popularity around the world, it’s been facing headwinds in the United States, where existing projects are under threat and new proposals are stalled.

So it’s heartening to hear that researchers examining wind turbines’ impact on fish have discovered that, while there are some negative effects during construction, fish species not only accommodate the new structures, but also benefit from them. Lobsters, for instance, seem to be creating homes among the turbines, using the foundations to hide from predators. Haddock, a commercially valuable fish off the coast of Scotland, treat the foundations not as a home but as a buffet, as prey species hang out there.

While wind turbines have already been acquitted of harming whales, it’s good to know that other marine creatures near turbines seem equally safe.

Oh, and accusations that wind turbines kill birds and bats? Wildly exaggerated. Far more deadly are cats, fossil fuel projects, and buildings.

Breezily,

Dot
