Dear Reader,
Each year, author and activist Parker J. Palmer would visit the Boundary Waters Canoe Area of northern Minnesota — a million acres of protected woodland near the Canadian border. And with each visit, he would feel his soul restored. Or, as he put it, he felt “fed.” Until, that is, July 4, 1999, when a derecho tore through this beloved space. A derecho is a widespread storm that can bring sustained hurricane force winds. It can cause devastating damage, and when it ripped through the Boundary Waters, it tore out more than a million trees, which created perfect tinder for the forest fires that followed in the next few years.
When Palmer returned and witnessed the damage, he considered leaving and not coming back. It felt heartbreaking. But he stayed, and he returned in subsequent years. And with that choice, he wrote, he became witness to the resurrection of this beloved place. “I saw how the void created by death had been filling with new life.” With time, ground that had been flattened by the storm and fires grew raspberries and lupine and aspens, bursting with new life.
