Dear Reader,
If you’re like Dot, you likely haven’t given a whole lot of thought to when or how (or if!) you should flush out your water heater. But Bluedot’s Mr. Fix-It spends a lot of time thinking about how all of us can extend the life of our stuff and, by boosting efficiency, save money.
That’s his thinking behind flushing our water heaters. Flushing prevents sediment buildup, corrosion, unpredictable water temps, and, consequently, higher bills.

Keep in mind that if your water heater is at the end of its life, a heat pump version will be far more energy-efficient.
And while you’re flushing, adjust the temperature on your water heater to no more than 120°F, insulate any exposed water pipes, and install low-flow showerheads. Any showerhead with a WaterSense label cuts water usage by more than 2,500 gallons annually.
