It’s Feel-Good Friday, and Dot’s shining her light on a couple of sunshiney stories. First up, the largest solar mural in the world was recently erected in Edmonton, Alberta.

Renowned Indigenous artist Lance Curtain created the 85-foot-high mural, which covers the side of a mixed-use housing project and generates clean energy. “I’m excited to bring First Nations and Chinese representation to this beautiful building,” Cardinal said. “To honour both cultures, we were inspired by the animals of the seven sacred grandfather teachings of the Cree tradition and the 12 animals of the Chinese zodiac. This mural depicts these creatures living together in unity — seeing each other and sharing the same space within one harmonious community.” The mural has been recognized by Guinness World Records.

Not to be outdone, the Solar Mamas of Zanzibar are delivering solar energy to poor communities, thanks to an NGO called Barefoot College, which recruited and trained a group of illiterate mothers to install and maintain solar systems. These thirteen women will also be part of a newly created center that will continue to train more women.
Solar energy can be cost-prohibitive to many African households if they have to buy the system outright. Instead, the Solar Mamas model offers a rental system. What’s more, without local support and expertise to take care of equipment, many systems end up failing.
While the culture in which these women live remains patriarchal (one of the women was divorced by her husband when she undertook the training), their commitment remains strong. As one Solar Mama put it, “we are 13 now, and when we are old, we will be many, many more.”
