First up is an Ugly Duckling twist with a squat Canada gosling that’s been adopted by a pair of long-legged sandhill cranes in Madison, Wisconsin. “The first time I saw the family, I did a double take,” writes Anne Readel in Smithsonian magazine. It’s an odd pairing, but one that scientists expect will become more common, as both Canada geese and sandhill crane populations have rebounded, putting both species in greater contact with each as they share an overlapping taste for urban-rural habitats. This story might not have a happy ever after, warn experts, as the species have dissimilar diets, behave differently on land and in water (the gosling is reportedly swimming circles around its parents and siblings), and follow different migration patterns. But thus far, reports are that the parents and offspring gaze at each other “lovingly.”
