Dear Reader,
Dot first learned of todayβs Climate Champ when Tzeporah Berman was fighting hard for Canadaβs boreal forest against toilet paper companies determined to fell giant trees so we might wipe our tushies. Some of these magnificent trees are more than 1,000 years old, key allies in our fight against climate change. And yet, see above. Bummer, no? (Dot has strong feelings about toilet paper. Check it out.) Tzeporah had some success in preserving our boreal forest but, of course, as long as corporations benefit from destroying it, the fight continues.
And, Reader, Tzeporah is fighting an even larger battle for which she was recently profiled by the IKEA Foundation, which aims to help people and organizations working against climate change. Tzeporah is calling, loudly and clearly, for a fossil fuel non-proliferation treaty β a concrete, binding plan to end the expansion of new coal, oil, and gas projects, and a global transition away from fossil fuels.
Acknowledging her recognition by IKEA, Tzeporah said, βMy hope for the future is that weβre able to see across race, class, and political differences, and come together with a common sense of purpose. We need to build a movement that includes millions who are standing up together to call for the future that we want, a cleaner and safer future.β Then she told the story of her grandmother, who said that βThe world has entirely changed in my lifetime, and it will in yours as well. Never underestimate the power we have to make change.β
Thank-you Tzeporah Berman, for the work you do to help us see across race, class, and political differences, and come together with a common purpose. And huzzah to your wise grandmother, who reminds all of us that the change we seek is possible.
And weβve got some Climate Champ love to extend to IKEA, which doesnβt just talk a good climate game, they walk the talk, partnering with Project Drawdown, among others, to ensure that their business practices back up their commitment to sustainability. As their spokesperson pragmatically noted, βItβs good business to be a good business.β
Non-proliferationally,
Dot
