Dear Reader,
Gift-giving season can be a fraught one for us conscientious consumers. On the one hand, we are all too aware of the impact of our cultureβs voracious consumerism on the planet. On the other, we exist within this culture and delight in giving gifts that make our loved onesβ lives easier and better. And so we embrace Bluedotβs Buy Less, Buy Better mantra β curbing our consumption and sticking to products that are made ethically and with better-for-the-planet materials.Β
And so it is with genuine glee that I introduce Dotβs Twelve Days of Giftmas, where I will choose a dozen lovely gifts for this holiday season and share them with you. Itβs a chance to show off our new store, The Bluedot Living Collection, and an opportunity for all of you to support companies and products that underscore your values.Β
You might ask why we bothered to create our own store. Isnβt there already enough shopping in this world?! Iβll let our Marketplace editor, Elizabeth Weinstein, explain: βWe created The Bluedot Living Collection to help our readers easily find both practical sustainable necessities and unique, beautiful gifts in one place. In my three years reviewing sustainable products for Bluedot, I've seen plenty of stores that do one or the other well. But I can't think of a single store that does a great job doing both. Weβre hoping that our new shop will help fill that gap. Iβm thrilled with what weβve got so far, and because weβre adding new items often, I think itβs just going to get better and better.β

What does Dot have for you on Day
1? Letβs begin with one of Dotβs favorite things in the world: socks!! Remember the days when a pair of socks lasted until you outgrew them? Those days are back, as long as your feet are clad in Solmate Socks, which look like a box of crayons busted loose, mated with some yarn, and produced offspring of pure toe-tapping joy.
|
|
|
Solmate, a family-owned, Certified B Corp based in North
Carolina, makes all of its socks here in the U.S. using Oeko-Tex certified yarns. The Solmate folks pay all of their employees a living wage and offer them health insurance. I wish that it didnβt knock my socks off to learn about an apparel maker paying a living wage, but alas, itβs definitely the exception rather than the rule. And it should be celebrated!Β
Dot knows you want a pair or two of these delightfully mismatched, smile-inducing socks, Reader! And Dot knows that you want them for everyone you love because these socks will not be tossed mere months from purchase because a toe poked out, because a seam tore, because a hole formed. Just like in the good olβ days.
Longlastingly,
Dot
