Dear Reader,

We all know that the tortoise beats the hare in the children’s fable. In real life, however, that’s not always the case. When a turtle gets injured on the road in the province of Quebec, the Turtle Taxi steps in, putting to work its volunteers who transport harmed half-shells to a specialized rehabilitation center in Laval.

In Ontario, turtle crossing guards ensure safe passage for any slowpokes, many of whom cross busy roadways to reach places where they like to lay their eggs. And in Massachusetts, it’s the Turtle Rescue League that creates signs, ushers turtles across the road, and helps during emergencies (you can even foster or adopt a turtle).

There’s no shortage of ways to help beleaguered turtles and tortoises of all kinds, including protecting sea turtle eggs from poachers and predators

Bluedot editor Britt Bowker wrote about how organizations work to protect cold-stunned sea turtles along the Cape Cod coast.

If you love turtles as much as Dot does, search for opportunities in your community to get involved. What can feel better than helping these unhurried half-shells get where they’re going without harm?

Slowly but Steadily,

Dot
