Dear Reader,

Dot’s favorite Climate Champs are those who see a problem and then get to work solving it β€” like Maryland’s Jon Merryman, who was flat-out sick and tired (lol) of all the illegally discarded tires he was finding in his favorite ravine. β€œFor some reason, they tick me off more than anything,” he told a Washington Post reporter. β€œI definitely hate tires.”

Wearing a uniform of gloves, a fluorescent vest, and bug repellent, Merryman deadlifts dozens of tires, sometimes going as far as Philadelphia, Atlanta, and Florida to help other communities tackle their tire trash.

To help bring attention to his efforts, he uses Sharky D’Shark, a plastic Great White that he found during one of his cleanups. It was β€œtoo cool” to send to landfill, so instead he deployed the mascot to social media to drum up attention.

For a guy who spends his days picking up others’ garbage, the aptly named Merryman is surprisingly joyful, and he seems to love his work. On a recent South Korean vacation with his wife, he found himself picking up trash on Jeju Island. β€œThere’s a lot of trash there,” he said.

Do you know a Climate Champ in your community? Tell Dot about them.

Tiredly,

Dot
