Dear Readers,
Do you know the term "global weirding"? I think I like it more than “global warming,” and maybe even more than “climate change.” It’s a little cheekier. And sometimes, it just feels more accurate. The phrase never really took hold, but it seems tailor-made for the insane weather we’ve experienced recently. Ten inches of snow in Florida?! That’s global weirding.

It’s a beautiful day to spend inside.
(United Archives Gmbh / Alamy Stock Photo) |
About a thousand miles north of the Florida panhandle, in Pennsylvania, Punxsutawney Phil saw his shadow on Groundhog Day, forecasting six more weeks of winter rather than an early spring. The famous rodent may be better known for his schtick than his accuracy, but one fact holds true: More major storms hit during February than during any other month. In Southern California, where I’m from, February is historically the wettest month (and let’s pray that Southern California does continue to get rain — in small, gentle, consistent doses, as opposed to landslide-inducing atmospheric rivers). And in most of North America, March isn’t known for great weather … except, maybe in Florida and Arizona.
What does this all mean? Well, I’m not putting away my throw blankets or parka anytime soon. I suspect that I’ll want to keep bundling up for quite some time, and you may want to do the same. That’s why this week I’m sharing some items designed to keep you snug as a bug and entertained indoors, written in the order that you might use the items while enjoying a lazy day.
Today, President’s Day in the U.S., is an ideal time to stock up on some of these winter items, as stores make room for spring merchandise, so you may find some great sales. I hope this list inspires you to relax and take advantage of the peace that a wintry day can offer.
Stay cozy and happy shopping!

Glogg, a classic (and fun to say) Nordic concoction, is a hot drink usually enjoyed around the winter holidays. Typically, it consists of wine, juice, syrups, spices, aromatics, and a mix of spirits. My take on glogg leans heavily on the flavor of black currant, aka cassis, which in my estimation pairs smashingly well with red wine and port. The resulting drink delivers a strong, sweet, fruity jolt that makes it equally effective as cold weather aperitif, après-ski cocktail, or reviver of half-frozen arctic explorers.
