Dear Reader,

Dot’s eight-year-old washing machine is currently on the blink, and our repair guy tells us that the necessary part costs roughly half the price of a new appliance. Meanwhile, Father Dot, who recently turned 96, celebrated by throwing a load of laundry into his almost equally aged machine … well, not quite. But it’s at least 35 years old.

I’m the first to applaud manufacturers for dramatically improving the efficiency of new appliances. But as for their longevity? Thumbs down.

Which is where today’s Climate Champ comes in.

Sylvie D'Aoust, aka Recycle Warrior Grl (she’s so efficient, she doesn’t even waste vowels), trolls the streets of Quebec, picking up discarded appliances for the scrap metal, because she abhors useful things going to landfill. This hero’s origin story? Not the stuff of the Marvel universe β€” she’s just someone passionate about recycling and repurposing and willing to don the coveralls and gloves to get the job done.

β€œAny time D'Aoust gets her hands on an appliance, she'll use a magnet to see if it's steel or aluminum,” the CBC tells us. β€œShe’ll then cut off the cords, which contain valuable copper, and sort the metals and cords by type on her truck’s bed and seats.”

She often sells still-functioning parts (I should let my repair guy know!) as well as the scrap metal.

Dot loves resourceful people who see someone else’s trash and recognize not just treasure, but also a business opportunity.

Scrappily,

Dot
