In addition to ambient air, a heat pump also uses electricity as an energy source. The increased electricity demand is generated most sustainably and cheaply with a solar system. There are three different possibilities for placing a heat pump: externally placed, internally placed and a combination of internally and externally placed heat pumps, so-called split systems. Criteria for the respective installation types are, for example: legal regulations (e.g. noise protection), conditions of the surroundings (e.g. distance to neighboring houses and roads) and the wishes of the building owner regarding space. The heat pump also works in freezing cold. It only becomes critical at a range of -20 degrees. In the rare event that it is that cold, the heat pump can also heat purely electrically - so you will certainly never freeze.

There is no drop in performance over the entire service life of the heat pump. On the contrary - modern heat pumps in particular can themselves be better adjusted over time and thus increase their overall efficiency. Similar to a refrigerator, however, there can be wear and tear on moving parts. Depending on the building's insulation, the severity of the winter and the desired indoor temperature, the average electricity consumption of a heat pump is around 4000-6000 kWh. On average, this means that the electricity demand doubles, but it also eliminates oil and gas altogether.

If you also opt for a solar system, you can feed the heat pump with your own electricity. This greatly increases the financial advantages that a solar system offers anyway. In addition, you are particularly independent with this combination.

Most heat pumps have an integrated emergency heating system that comes into play in the event of a failure. The electric heater then generates 1:1 heat from the electricity, instead of the 4:1 efficiency with a heat pump.

Only the refrigerant, which is similar to the one in a refrigerator, is not entirely harmless. Heat pumps should therefore be recycled professionally.

A heat pump should always be recycled professionally. The fee for this is already paid automatically at the time of purchase and thus the heat pump can be disposed of without further costs.

The building envelope does not have to meet any specific requirements in order for a heat pump to be installed. However, there are two points you should bear in mind:

1. The efficiency of the heat pump is only as good as the insulation of the house.
2. There should be radiators with as large a surface area as possible (e.g. underfloor heating), due to the low flow temperature of the heat pump.

Ideally, the house should be well insulated so that the energy can be produced cleanly and used efficiently. Windows, roof, façade and basement floor should be insulated. Ideally, the house's own electricity is produced on the roof and powers a heat pump, among other things - and perhaps one day an electric car.
