Dear Reader,
Our modern days hold daily miracles that were unimaginable to generations past. The turn of a tap delivers clean potable water. A climate-controlled fridge ensures that our food remains fresh. The jab of a needle protects us from diseases that decimated families a century ago. And policies passed by governments have given us clean air that not too long ago hung dark and smoggy over highly populated cities.
And yet, as Hank Green tells us, we tend to not consider the bad things that don’t happen, thanks to this progress. For instance, as Green goes on to say, “the number of lives saved by controlling air pollution in America is probably over 200,000 per year,” (his figures are pretty much bang on), “but the number of people who think their life was saved by controlling air pollution is zero.”
