Dear Reader,

Each morning, as regular readers know, Dot walks along the shore of a nearby river with a good friend. And, lately, we’ve been accompanied by someone else. Or rather a pair. Two bald eagles have joined our morning ritual, though they, obviously, don’t rely on their feet. They're a spectacular sight and represent an incredible conservation success story, as Bluedot contributor Dana Sacks reported for us. There’s something about birds of prey that inspire such awe.

Greenland has been plenty in the news lately for dumb reasons so here’s a story from a field biologist about the country that instead inspires awe. It’s about Greenland's peregrine falcons, which, the writer tells us, β€œhold near-mythical appeal in our collective imagination, and for good reason. Topping out at speeds of more than 320 kilometers [about 200 miles] an hour, they’re the fastest species on Earth, plummeting from the sky like amber-eyed missiles. They hit their prey at such staggeringly high velocities that they’ve prompted studies on the physics of momentum and the aerodynamics of flight. Their nest sites, or aeries β€” selected for their inaccessibility to predators and view of the world below β€” often require biologists to include technical climbing gear as part of their standard kit. As falconry subjects, they’ve inspired a vernacular of terms that roll off the tongue like a chant β€” tiercel, eyas, bewit, creance, stoop, keen, haggard, passager, bate. And with sharply masked faces, delicately barred undersides, and wings shaped like boomerangs, they’re also a visual delight.”

You want to read more, right? Like the trajectory of bald eagles, the story of the peregrine is β€œa tale of recovery, resilience, and change that transcends this small polar population.” Read the whole story here. (And for more on peregrine falcons, check out Bluedot Brooklyn’s story here.)

Swoopingly,

Dot

P.S. Sending my American readers wishes for a meaningful Martin Luther King Jr. Day.
