DISPATCHES FROM ALL OVER · SUSTAINABLE LIVING ADVICE · ECO-FRIENDLY RECIPES

“In a World Cup metaphor — it really did feel like a championship game heading into extra time in knife-edge fashion.

“For the global biodiversity community, the next phase of hard work already beckons: mainstreaming the framework’s architecture into country-level policy that will deliver meaningful progress where it matters most, across the imperiled ecosystems that represent our planet’s collective life-support system.”

Andrew Deutz, Director of Global Policy, Institutions, and Conservation Finance for The Nature Conservancy, on the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework, which was adopted in Montreal on December 18. The accord, called the “Paris Agreement for biodiversity,” is a shared international roadmap out of the ecological crisis — a pledge to conserve 30% of the world’s lands, seas, and inland waters, and secure the funds necessary to finance the transition toward a more nature-positive world.

DISPATCHES FROM ALL OVER

BIG IDEAS AND LOCAL CHANGEMAKERS

Summer Rylander reports on how the return of bison to a Saskatchewan ecosystem restored its health, and also writes about sustainable signs in Denmark. In a dispatch from Pittsburgh, Kellie B. Gormly tells us about the Three Rivers Waterkeepers protecting the city’s iconic rivers.

One Small Step for You

One giant leap for planetkind

Sure, garbage disposals are convenient. But given their impact on our wastewater treatment systems, it’s far better to compost your food waste than dump it down your drain, our Dear Dot tells a curious cook. Better still, let’s reduce our food waste entirely, by storing food properly so it doesn’t spoil, avoiding unnecessarily throwing food out, buying only what you will use, and trying recipes that use the entirety of ingredients.
Want to compost right on your countertop?

THE BLUEDOT KITCHEN

Prioritizing seasonal and local ingredients gives you sustainable eating at its very best. Right now, this feels seasonal: a home-cooked roasted chicken (try to get a locally raised one) optimized for maximum crispiness, and a garlicky bean, meat-free dish.

RECIPE: Smoky Spatchcocked Roasted Chicken and Alliums

RECIPE: Garlicky Wilted Greens and Beans with Croutons

Cleo’s Clean Cooking: Chocolate Chip Cookies

Bluedot crew member Cleo Carney loves baking, and she loves to make her brownies, cookies, cakes, and more as planet- (and people-) healthy as possible.

FAVORITE THINGS: Counting the Creatures We Love

And a Waxwing in a Cedar Tree

Many of us Bluedotters are birdwatchers, and we can attest to the fact that watching birds really does make you feel better. A recent study published on nature.com showed that “everyday encounters with birdlife were associated with time-lasting improvements in mental wellbeing.” Join Audubon’s (123rd!) annual Christmas Bird Count (any days between Dec. 14 and Jan. 5) to document your avian neighbors (and delight yourself in the process).

And Baby Makes 351

You’ve probably read about the peril facing whales, especially North Atlantic Right Whales. (Read this excellent piece about Dr. Michael Moore, who studies whales at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute in Massachusetts.) In a bit of lovely nativity news, the Clearwater (Florida) Marine Aquarium reported that “Medusa,” a right whale mom, gave birth to a baby recently off the coast of Georgia — the first documented birth of the 2022-23 season. When there are fewer than 350 North Atlantic right whales remaining (and fewer than 100 breeding females), every baby matters.

Bluedot's Guide to Getting Rid of Anything

Before you toss those holiday greeting cards in the recycling bin (keep in mind that anything with glitter, foil, or glued-on bits are no-nos), consider sending them instead to St. Jude’s Ranch for Children, where people are trained to create new cards from your old ones to resell and raise funds. For more tips on how to get rid of (almost!) anything, check our guide.
