Dear Reader,

Many years ago, Dot sat in a darkened movie theater awed by the film The Messenger, which told the sad story of the world’s songbirds and the threats they face. Save Our Songbirds tells us that, in North America, we’ve lost nearly three billion birds, a drop of 30%, mostly to human-caused problems, including a warming climate and habitat loss.

So it’s heartening news that an area of China where water conservation efforts have been put in place is welcoming back birds. As Fix the News reports, in β€œChina’s Gansu province … the restoration of the Loess plateau has been described by the World Bank as the largest and most successful water and soil conservancy project of all time,” noting that β€œwhen the environment improved, all the birds returned."

We can quibble about whether it was, in fact, β€œall” the birds, but it was definitely very, very many of them.

Flightfully,

Dot
