Two years ago, my husband and I hosted Thanksgiving dinner in our new Manhattan condo for the first time. Three days before the main event, I realized we didn’t have a carving board that could contain the juices of the heritage bird I’d ordered. I signed on to my local Facebook Buy Nothing group, asked if anybody had one I could borrow, and a kind neighbor came through. The attractive, hefty board made the meal all the more elegant, and I felt real gratitude for the kindness of strangers.

You can’t control family; you can control your tablescape.

I always seem to forget how much there is to do before T Day. Sniff the spices for potency. Stock up on good olive oil. Clean any errant wax out of the vintage crystal candlesticks. Replenish my supply of beeswax tapers. Order reusable bamboo “paper” towels for last-minute messes. Sharpen the knives. Press the linens. Polish the silver. Not to mention, plan the menu!

It’s all a bit hectic, but these preparations help me feel ready to take on the holidays. I thrive when the things around me sparkle and shine. It’s not about hosting Thanksgiving. It’s about maximizing the joy of home during the last months of the year: something we all deserve.

Happy celebrating and happy shopping,

–Elizabeth Weinstein

The Best Dutch Ovens

After a decade of weekly use, I continue to admire my Le Creuset Round Dutch Oven’s even, consistent cooking, and I remain delighted by how easy it is to clean. I also think Le Creuset makes the best silicone spatulas around. Read our review.

Lovely, Non-Toxic Pans

Caraway makes gorgeous, non-toxic cookware that works on all stovetops. Their ceramic non-stick pans withstand temperatures of up to 550°F, so I can feel safe popping the pan under the broiler and adding a lush layer of melty cheese to dinner. Read our review.

Good, Sharp Knives

It’s said that poor craftsfolks blame their tools, but I think that having a good chef’s knife or two is essential. The right knife makes cooking faster and safer. Zwilling’s Pro line is Certified Carbon Neutral, and feels great in the hand. Read our review.

Editors’ Favorite Appliance

Our founder and Dear Dot both love the Breville Smart Oven Air Fryer Pro. The countertop appliance can make toast, bake a quarter-sheet tray of cookies, and even roast a 14-pound turkey — jobs it does well — all while using much less electricity than a wall oven. Read our review.

Healthier, More Efficient Stoves

My gas stove is 50–75% functional depending on its mood, and my husband and I are about to make the big switch to induction. I won’t lie; we’re a bit nervous. But induction is better for the Earth, and everyone I know who has one loves it. Read our review.

Maple Caramel Corn

Tammie Donroe Inman’s crowd-pleasing Maple Caramel Corn recipe stars two native New England ingredients, making it a perfect Thanksgiving recipe. No, I’m not suggesting that you serve popcorn alongside the bird. But it would be great to snack on while you’re prepping the main meal or watching football. Get Popping.

Axiology, the plastic-free, multi-use crayon

Roasted Pears and Delicata Squash with Fall Greens

Cookbook author and Bluedot Living Contributing Editor Catherine Walthers brings together some of fall’s loveliest colors in this warm salad. If you still have open farmers markets in your area, you’ll have your choice of pears and squash, and hopefully bitter greens as well. I wouldn’t skimp in this arena; the radicchio and frisée provide a contrast that highlights the natural sugars in the other ingredients. Celebrate fall’s bounty.

Ginger-Spiced Pear Upside-Down Cake

I’ve long appreciated vegan foods simply because of the way they can push boundaries in texture and form. (And because I love vegetables.) But, I’m often skeptical of people who tell me that something tastes “just like” the real thing — especially when that person hasn’t actually had the real thing in years. One of the reasons I love Cleo Carney’s vegan, gluten-free recipes is that Cleo eats and enjoys dairy, gluten, and eggs. She simply thrills in experimenting with health-forward, Earth-conscious recipes. Her recipes are good — and not just in comparison to other vegan or gluten-free fare.

When she’s not asking the folks at Bloomingdale’s and Nordstrom to try on all of their sustainable sneakers in a size 9½, she can be found at the Union Square Greenmarket or gardening on her rooftop terrace.

P.S. The still up top comes from Woody Allen’s 1986 movie, Hannah and Her Sisters, and shows Mia Farrow and Dianne Wiest lighting candles around the family’s Thanksgiving table.
