Dear Reader,
Todayβs lesson in βyes, your vote mattersβ takes us to the Amazon, where Braziliansβ choice to oust let-the-planet-burn Jair Bolsonara and vote in Luiz InΓ‘cio Lula da Silva resulted in a dramatic reduction in Amazon deforestation in 2023. President Lula rode to victory in part on a promise to end deforestation by 2030 in Brazil. The country contains 60% of the Amazon rainforest, often called βthe lungs of the planetβ and home to three million species of plants and animals and one million Indigenous peoples.Β
βRainforest destruction had surged to a 12-year high under his predecessor, Jair Bolsonaro,β the BBC tells us, along with showing us incredible aerial photography of the dramatic change in tree cover. Bravo to the voters who opted to protect this crucial ecosystem.
Gratefully,
Dot

To rehydrate dry and hard lemons, roll them on the counter with a bit of pressure and then place them in a pot of simmering hot water for a few minutes. Use immediately, perhaps to make lavender lemonade.
