Today’s lesson in “yes, your vote matters” takes us to the Amazon, where Brazilians’ choice to oust let-the-planet-burn Jair Bolsonara and vote in Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva resulted in a dramatic reduction in Amazon deforestation in 2023. President Lula rode to victory in part on a promise to end deforestation by 2030 in Brazil. The country contains 60% of the Amazon rainforest, often called “the lungs of the planet” and home to three million species of plants and animals and one million Indigenous peoples.
“Rainforest destruction had surged to a 12-year high under his predecessor, Jair Bolsonaro,” the BBC tells us, along with showing us incredible aerial photography of the dramatic change in tree cover. Bravo to the voters who opted to protect this crucial ecosystem.
