Dear Reader,

That’s how much less tree cover there is in communities of color compared to mostly white neighborhoods in the United States. What that means is that those relatively treeless communities are, on average, 13Β°F hotter. And here’s another number for you: 2,325. That’s the number of Americans confirmed to have died from heat-related causes in 2023.Β

So tree cover can be a matter of life and death and is certainly a matter of equity.Β

But good news, Reader. American Forests β€” thanks to funding from the Inflation Reduction Act β€” will be taking action in 36 communities in just its starting round. β€œOver the past five years, American Forests has led and mobilized a nationwide Tree Equity movement to address inequitable tree cover in cities and its life-or-death implications,” reads a statement from the organization.Β

Want to help? It might be as simple as caring for your neighborhood street trees. Or you could reach out to organizations, such as The Nature Conservancy or Sierra Club or local tree planting groups.Β

As the saying goes, the best time to plant a tree was thirty years ago. The second best time is today.

Shadily,

Dot
