Dear Reader,
For the most part, the comings and goings of fish beneath the waterβs surface isnβt part of our daily lives. But imagine, if you will, that youβre a fish keen to get to spawning grounds for a little piscine action. The problem? Thereβs a lock. But now imagine that we humans can, with the simple press of a key, release that lock and liberate the fish to continue their journey.
This βfish doorbellβ has become something of a sensation, thanks to plenty of media
coverage. Havenβt yet heard of the βvisdeurbel?β Hereβs the story: Every spring, fish in the Netherlands try to swim up a canal. But at that time of year, the lock rarely opens. The consequence was a lot of fish unable to get to their spawning grounds and, therefore, reproduce. Another consequence was that, as they waited, they were vulnerable to being eaten. But some smart folks came up with a simple solution. A doorbell that announced the arrival of fish, alerting the lock operator to open up.
But hereβs the best part! We get to participate in this, ahem, streaming service. We log onto the
site, and when we see fish waiting, we ring the doorbell. Simple. And amazing.Β
Swimmingly,
Dot
