Dear Reader,

It seems there’s not much that can’t be solved by digging in a garden, or even just being around gardens, something to celebrate on this National Gardening Day. Dr. Richard Claxon tells us that “gardening causes falls in blood pressure, heart rate and body mass index, which protect us from stroke, cardiovascular diseases, obesity, cancers and other diseases.” For every 10% increase in time spent around gardens, we gain an estimated five years of life. (Dot’s no math whiz, but I think this means I’ll live to be 148 years old.)

Sue Stuart-Smith, psychotherapist and author of The Well-Gardened Mind, says that “proximity to green nature has been shown to alleviate anxiety, improve mood and revitalise cognitive functioning, as well as reducing blood pressure and levels of the stress hormone cortisol. Research shows that taking exercise outdoors is more beneficial than exercising in the gym. In addition, gardening involves contact with the soil which provides exposure to ‘friendly’ bacteria that can enhance the immune system.”
