DISPATCHES FROM ALL OVER · SUSTAINABLE LIVING ADVICE · ECO-FRIENDLY RECIPES

"I saw how new ideas often travel from the margins and the shadows to the center, to the limelight where people — judges, presidents, prime ministers, international bodies — make decisions. If you don’t follow the sequence of events over years or decades, you can believe that these are the powerful handing down change, rather than see that change began outside and below, and grew until the powerful were obliged to ratify it."

Rebecca Solnit, in a recent story in the New Statesman, on why hope and taking the long view are part of climate activism. We at Bluedot share Solnit’s conviction that we can’t afford despair, and that, with the midterm elections coming up, we must elect people who understand the urgency of climate change and are focused on solutions.

DISPATCHES FROM ALL OVER

BIG IDEAS AND LOCAL CHANGEMAKERS

Catch up on cool people and ideas from all over the Bluedot Universe: Donald Frazier reports from Longmont, Colorado, where the sun and a family farm are in business together. On Martha’s Vineyard, Luanne Johnson is helping Northern long-eared bats find winter homes. And Joseph von Schmitt writes from Baja, California, about a community garden that grew from a derelict lot.

One Small Step for You

One giant leap for planetkind

The way you do your laundry has a huge impact. Three tips today:

  • Use Dropp’s or laundry strips to lower greenhouse gas emissions from transport and reduce plastic (washing in cold water helps too!).

  • Dryer balls mean you buy once and then use over and over — plus the waxy film from dryer sheets can clog up your filter, forcing it to work harder to do the job.

  • Speaking of dryer filters, clean yours after every use. It boosts the machine’s efficiency, which reduces drying time.

Make It Happen

THE BLUEDOT KITCHEN

Prioritizing seasonal and local ingredients gives you deliciously sustainable eating. On the eve of November, we couldn’t stop thinking about squash, soup, and other cozy, autumnal dishes.

RECIPE: Kale, Bean, and Vegetable Soup

Mr. Fix-it: How to Flush Your Hot Water Heater

It pays to take care of our belongings — they’ll work more efficiently, last longer, and, often, save us money in repairs. With that in mind, Bluedot’s Mr. Fix-it shows us how to drain the sediment from our water heaters. It’s surprisingly simple but you’ll be surprised (possibly disgusted) at just how much crud has accumulated!

BUY LESS/BUY BETTER

We think Halloween, which presents many (well, at least some?) of us with the need to apply or remove our vampire makeup, is as good a time as any to feature skin-care favorites from among our Bluedot Collection. Want more? See our marketplace here.

Ilia C Beyond Triple Serum

So this serum will certainly calm your make-up weary skin, but we really love that Ilia invites customers to send them ten used/empty beauty product containers (theirs or anybody else’s) each month, and they’ll recycle them. Now, that’s a treat!

DEAR DOT: ANSWERS FROM OUR ADVICE COLUMNIST

Should I Rake The Leaves in My Yard?

Is there a benefit to leaving fallen leaves in place?, a reader asks Dear Dot. Part of the challenge is casting aside our ideas of tidiness, Dot says. A neat lawn is often an unhealthy one. By leaving leaves on the ground, you’re essentially putting out a buffet of nutrients that benefit your backyard ecosystem and your soil.

Bluedot's Guide to Getting Rid of Anything

October 29 is Take Back Day — when the DEA urges all of us to get rid of no-longer-needed prescription medications to help avoid misuse or overdoses. Do not flush or dump medications down the sink, where they find their way into waterways and, potentially, harm water creatures. If you miss Take Back Day, ask at your local pharmacy, or visit this site for other disposal locations. For more tips on Getting Rid of (Almost) Anything, check out Bluedot’s handy guide.
