Dear Readers,

As a Los Angeles native, I’ll admit that it’s taken me decades to really wrap my mind around the concept of “fall.” To start, my solidly autumnal October 4th birthday was often one of the hottest, if not the very hottest, days of the year in L.A. I went to college in St. Louis, and remember delighting in a drizzly, gray day with a temp in the mid-60s early in my freshman year. “This must be fall!” I exclaimed to an acquaintance from Boston. “No,” he told me. “This is just lousy weather. And you really don’t need that scarf.” Touché!

When Harry Met Sally for an autumn stroll in Central Park, they both displayed effortless fall style.

Now that I’ve spent roughly half of my adult life in New York City and the other half in Los Angeles, I’ve decided, perhaps unscientifically, that fall is, at least in part, just a mindset. It’s just like that cartoon in The New Yorker that shows the same woman wearing completely different outfits for 70-degree days in fall and spring. Bottom line: If wearing boots and a scarf in warmish weather will make you feel good, do it! This week, I’ll be sharing some timeless clothes and accessories to wear this fall — and maybe even this coming spring — and for years to come.

Happy fall, and happy shopping!

Dear Dot: Should I Rake Fall Leaves, or Leave Them Alone?

Dear Dot,

I always wrestle with this fall question: Should I rake when I'm tired of the clutter on the lawn, or should I wait until all the leaves have fallen? Is there any benefit to leaving the fallen leaves in place for a while?

–James, via email

Dear James,Put down that rake, my friend. For far too long, living an eco-life has been equated with more work, more expense, more effort. That, of course, is a total misconception, but it’s a stubborn one. Your question brings about a perfect example of how choosing to live more lightly on Mother Earth also lightens our workload.
