We're all shocked about the Park Fire in Northern California, which as of Wednesday was one of the largest fires in California history. In the Bay Area, Dorpor sheep have been doing their part to mitigate fire hazards. The self-shearing wooly weedwackers replaced a crew of goats — the sheep like shorter, finer grasses, and are more detail-oriented, nibbling up flammable grasses from around highways and Bay Area Baaaahrt train tracks. “All of our infrastructure was built for a planet that no longer exists.”
–Climate scientist Katharine Hayhoe
We’re coming off a week that reported the four hottest days in our planet’s record-keeping history and that brought us the story of a man whose feet melted due to extreme heat in Death Valley.
So it’s not surprising that this week also brought us an endorsement of Kamala Harris for President by 350 leading climate advocates, including John Kerry and friend of Bluedot Leah Stokes. As environmental activist and author Bill McKibben (read Bluedot’s interview with the creator of Third Act) recently said on a panel attended by climate reporters (including a Bluedot reporter), there is no issue on which the gap between candidates is so great as climate, pointing out that Trump stands alone among potential world leaders in his continued denial of climate change and policy proposals that not only don’t address climate issues but exacerbate them. |

Sophie (pictured above) and Char are fashion-loving sisters with a passion for the planet (and the budgets of starving students). Lucky for us, Sophie loves to shop second-hand online — and Char, a fashion design student, knows how to fix and style those thrifted finds. Sophie’s assessment of ThredUp — where she bought a like-new, office-friendly blazer — gets us started. |

Dear Dot,
I’m totally overwhelmed by the marketing from many different companies telling me why their product is so much better than everyone else’s. Do you have any fave cleaning products or bar shampoo recommendations?
–Jennifer
My dear Jennifer,
You can assemble a DIY cleaning kit of good old white vinegar, lemons, baking soda, and a bit of castile soap. Since you love scents, add in your favorite essential oils (lavender is a popular one, or anything citrus-y). You’ll not only have all you need to get your home sparkling, but you’ll save yourself a small fortune, too. The internet is chock-a-block with do-it-yourself cleaning recipes so get Googling and pick your favorite.
(Dot’s favorite? A surface scrub of baking soda and enough water to create a paste. Add a few drops of dish soap. You can make what you need or store extra. If it hardens, just add a bit more water to turn it back into a paste.)
As for castile soap, I am slavishly devoted to Dr. Bronner’s for, well, pretty much everything, including washing my floors, my walls, my countertops, and my body. But not just any Dr. Bronner’s — the almond-scented version. (You’ll discover your own favorite — the Citrus Orange is a close second for me. The peppermint’s not bad, either.)
What else does Dot recommend? Read on.

When Hurricane Beryl recently tore through Texas, it devastated the region, and around 200,000 had to make do without power for over a week. It’s a helpful reminder to be prepared for emergency situations, so we’re sharing three items that can help you should you lose power — or need power when you’re off the grid. |

If you camp often or summer storms regularly take out your power, consider a solar-powered Nature’s Generator. It costs less to run in the long term, plus it’s quieter than gas generators and doesn’t spew pollution. Save 10% on full-priced items with code BLUEDOT10. |

Flashlights and batteries should be in every emergency kit. Paleblue’s lithium-ion batteries have about a thousand lifetime uses, recharge in a lickety-split 90 minutes, and they’re actually more powerful than alkaline batteries, which means no flickering flashlights and stubborn remotes. |

We’re in the dog days of our favorite season and the virtual Bluedot office is a bit less populated while staff take their summer holidays. Wherever you are, we hope you’re able to enjoy the long sun-soaked days, the star-filled skies (check out these dark skies initiatives on Nantucket), and perhaps a thunderstorm to keep things interesting. See you in two weeks.
Enjoy the weekend, and we’ll see you in two weeks.
