Dear Reader,

Dot has long loved Lego (except beneath my tender feet as I navigated my son’s bedroom). Now, with news that the childhood staple will be made of recycled plastic, my love has multiplied.Β

It wasn’t easy, according to an article about Lego’s plans. And it will cost more, as conventional (ie. fossil-fuel-based) materials cost about half to a third as much as sustainable plastic β€” an increased cost that Lego says it will absorb rather than passing on to the consumer. It marks a move by other major toy companies, including Mattel and Hasbro, which each have plans to shift to recycled, recyclable, or bio-based plastics.

Prepare for the fossil fuel industry to continue to push back, eager to hold onto its share of the plastics market as the world moves toward renewable energy and oil and gas companies look for alternative revenue sources.Β

But on this Feel-Good Friday, we can trust that Lego is very good at building things … including momentum.

Constructively,

Dot
