Dear Readers,

Have you ever set a green resolution? I made my first as I was snorkeling in Borneo a few years ago and plastic bottles kept bumping into my head — from then on, I’d only use bar soap, not body wash. It was a little thing, but the decision made me feel good and inspired me to make more positive changes. This week, I’ll feature items that can support all kinds of resolutions — no diet or workout regimes, I promise! Existing (and aspiring) runners and cyclists will find ways to make their routines more eco-friendly.

I’d like to encourage everyone to begin the year by replacing at least one household or personal care item with a greener alternative (after using up what you’ve got). The nice part about this whole endeavor is that you get to pat yourself on the back right away; it’s really more of a change than a formal resolution, so you can’t fail. Consider starting with one of these simple swaps. (And if you already do all of these things: Great! You’ll find more ideas below.)

If you’re wondering what small swap is in my future: I’m on the lookout for more eco-friendly dental products that I (and my dentist) feel good about. I prefer aggressively minty toothpaste, and haven’t yet found something I like. As always, please feel free to send suggestions my way.

Happy New Year, and happy shopping!

Attainable Resolutions and Items to Help You Achieve Them

Enjoy Cooking More

A great chef’s knife makes cooking faster, safer, and more fun. I like the Zwilling Pro line because the knives feel great in the hand and they’re Certified Carbon Neutral. If your knives are just old, find a local professional to sharpen them; you’ll marvel at the difference a sharp knife makes. Read our review.

Train Your Dog

If you’d like to be happier and more relaxed in 2024, hang out with your dog more — and devote some of that time to ongoing training. This year, Finley and I plan to get his Intermediate Trick Dog title, and we’ll train with upcycled treats from Shameless Pets. (Finley’s picks: Duck-tato Jerky and Bone Broth Chews.) Connect with Nature

Finley is an expert bird-watcher, but I could use a little help. Heather Wolf’s delightful book, Find More Birds: 111 Surprising Ways to Spot Birds Wherever You Are, will aid you in your pursuit to slow down and enjoy the world around you more.

Toss Less Trash

The Lomi desiccates and dramatically decreases the volume of food waste, transforming it into something you can toss in your garden (or in the garbage). Either way, it will help you take out the trash less and reduce your home’s methane emissions. Get $50 off with code BLUEDOT. Read our review.

Simplify Your Life

If you want less stuff, put Dr. Bronner’s “18-in-1” claim to the test. Bluedot’s Digital Projects Manager relies on the castile soap to wash her hair, body, floors, dishes, laundry, and other things around the house, and says it’s great at just about everything. Read our review.

Wear Sunscreen

Skin cancer runs in my family, and I’ve had two good friends receive skin cancer diagnoses before 35. I take sunscreen seriously. Vacation brand is my favorite. I love the Baby Oil, the Classic Whip, and the miraculously-easy-to-rub-in Mineral SPF. When sunscreen is this fun, you use it. Read our review.

Ditch Bathroom Bottles

While I gave up body wash for bar soap ages ago, I never thought I’d find shampoo and conditioner bars that could make my long hair shiny and smooth. Then I found Ethique, an amazing line of solid hair and body care products. Affordable minis make it easy to try the bars without a big commitment. Read our review.

The Sustainable Cyclist

“When I was asked to do a story on being a ‘sustainable cyclist,’ my first thought was, ‘Ride a bike. That’s it. Boom. You’re sustainable,’ writes Jim Miller, avid bike-rider and Co-Editor of Bluedot Living San Diego. “But,” he realizes, “maybe it is a little more complicated.” If your 2024 goals include putting more miles on your bike, read The Sustainable Cyclist.

Running with the Climate in Mind

As a lifelong recycler and composter, Corey Burdick began to wonder how the principles of living sustainably could extend to running. In her article, Running with the Climate in Mind, she shares tips from Tina Muir, whose recent book on running sustainably addresses everything from old running shoes to energy gels to laundering tights. If you plan to start — or keep  — running in 2024, read the article Running with the Climate in Mind.

Elizabeth Weinstein, Bluedot’s Marketplace Editor, lives in Manhattan with her husband; her papillon, Finley; and her cats, SanDeE* and Modell. When she’s not asking the folks at Bloomingdale’s and Nordstrom to try on all of their sustainable sneakers in a size 9½, she can be found at the Union Square Greenmarket or gardening on her rooftop terrace.

P.S. The movie still above shows Eddie Murphy in the fiery 1983 comedy, Trading Places. In the scene, actor Denholm Elliot plays a butler preparing a jacuzzi for Mr. Murphy’s character.
