Dear Readers,
If youâre a fan of Bluedot, youâre no doubt familiar with our delightful, award-winning environmental advice column, Dear Dot. Our readers ask Dot all kinds of questions, and it turns out that a number of these queries are related to what you do (or donât do) in the bathroom. Things like How can I smell good without toxic chemicals?, How can I unclog a drain without Drano?, and Should I use the electric hand dryer or paper towels? |
|
Youâll be surprised how easy it is to incorporate sustainable swaps into your bathroom routine.
(©20th Century Fox / AJ Pics / Alamy Stock Photo) |
I distinctly remember the case of the dryer versus the paper towels, as it became a hot topic on our team Slack. Ever prescient, Dot told us that this issue was a great reminder ânot to sweat the small stuff.â She was right: In this instance, it turns out your choice here doesnât make a huge difference (although a modern electric hand dryer has a slightly lower carbon cost). The most efficient solution of all? Do as Dot does, and just âwipe your hands on your pants.â
While itâs best to follow that example and use less in general, there are a number of items we modern folk use on a regular basis. I donât plan on going without toilet paper, shampoo, or a razor anytime soon; I suspect you donât, either.
This week, Iâm highlighting sustainable swaps and upgrades for your bathroom. Here are a few great places to start. All starred items cost 10â20% less when you enter code BLUEDOT at checkout.
-
Buy fewer products containing plastics. Switch to natural loofahs* or sea sponges.* Try these biodegradable hair ties.*
-
Buy fewer products in plastic packaging. Deodorant* and toothpaste* options have grown tremendously in recent years.
-
Buy fewer disposable products in general. Consider metal razors;* washable facial rounds;* and reusable Q-tips,* period products,* and sheet masks.
-
Choose concentrated, water-free products. Bar soap, shampoo, and conditioner and concentrates deliver excellent results.
-
Learn to craft your own soaps, scrubs, cleaning solutions.
-
Use basics like lemons, salt, vinegar, baking soda, hydrogen peroxide and Dr. Bronnerâs (available on Amazon) to get your bathroom clean.
Now, I know I used the word âbuyâ a lot just now, so let me clarify: I donât recommend ditching anything youâve currently got. Itâs best to simply replace products as needed. One idea I do suggest you implement now is adding a recycling bin or two to your bathroom (get these elegant baskets for 10% off with code BLUEDOT10, or try sleek metal bins available on Amazon). A simple system makes recycling much easier, yet few people have bins outside of the kitchen or office.
Keep reading to learn about more great products, easy cleaning hacks, and a lesson from Dot about why toilet paper matters more than you might think.
Thanks for reading and happy shopping!
