I recently read “The Night Before Christmas” to my four-year-old niece, and I can’t stop thinking about how cozy the family in the poem is (before all the clatter). Imagining the children “nestled all snug in their beds,” and the narrator in his cap, “just settled down for a long winter’s nap,” I found myself a bit envious. Happily, I have a break on the horizon — we lucky Bluedotters will be taking off the week between Christmas and New Year's Day. I’ve got lots of plans, but the one that underpins them all — and that will truly make me feel merry and bright — is sleeping in. Whatever your schedule entails, I hope that you, too, have time to really rest, both next week and in the year ahead.

It’s time to settle in for a long winter’s nap.

That’s why I’ve decided to devote this newsletter to sleep essentials. You’ll find eco-friendly mattresses, bedding, linens, pajamas, and more, as well as a great article that discusses how to shop for bedding, with information on materials such as latex, down, and wool. (Beds aside, can you find three minutes of “down” time to fill out our reader survey? Your input will help us create content that’s even more in line with your interests. Thank you!)

Wishing you peaceful holidays and a cozy new year,

Room for Change: The Bedroom

“Until very recently, the regulation and business of mattresses and bed linens has been largely focused on fire safety (fair enough) and improving sleep (also fair) rather than environmentally conscious materials and sustainable practices,” writes Bluedot Contributing Editor Mollie Doyle.

“This also goes for sites and organizations that specialize in evaluating these products. They do not factor in the health of the planet, the health of the people making the product, or the health of the people sleeping on it. To further complicate things, whether you want to spend $100 or $10,000, you can find ‘organic’ or ‘sustainable’ mattresses, sheets, pillows, and blankets. So the question is: Is the product really green or just greenwashed? Is it just the right lingo or the right practices?” Learn all about shopping for mattresses, linens, and bedding in Mollie Doyle’s article.
