Dear Reader,

We at Bluedot are big fans of bees because they do so much to put food on our tables. Which is why we love today's Climate Champ Elizabeth Hilborn, who is such a bee fan that she dedicates her veterinarian practice in North Carolina to keeping them healthy, writing in The Guardian that, β€œI love pollinators; it is such a pleasure and privilege to work with them, so it doesn’t seem like work.”

How, um, buzzy do the bees keep Elizabeth? Like family pets, bees are subject to disease. β€œA common [one] is European foulbrood,” Elizabeth tells us. β€œYou can often smell it β€” it’s almost sweet and musky.” Just like a typical vet, she makes the diagnosis and then offers up a prescription.

This early in the year, the bees are just starting to make an appearance, she reminds us. β€œThat is often when the wild bee queens are out and may be distressed. And by saving her, that can save a whole colony. So there’s a lot resting on that one bee: if I can help her, I will.”

Let’s all celebrate today’s Climate Champ Elizabeth Hilborn, who cares about the creatures that many of us barely consider.

Buzzily,

Dot
