"Climate is a top-shelf political concern because it has been pushed there by those who care most; it is now on the verge of being addressed, at scale, because that push appears to have worked."

David Wallace-Wells, The New York Times

As summer draws to a close, we cheer the passage of the Inflation Reduction Act, truly meaningful legislation that tackles climate at a scale proportional to the moment. It is the product of a refusal to give up. May we all take that determination into fall.

DISPATCHES FROM ALL OVER

BIG IDEAS AND LOCAL CHANGEMAKERS

Catch up on cool people and ideas from all over the Bluedot Universe: Dispatcher Teresa Bergen stumbles upon the “Techno-tortoise” while driving through the Mojave Desert. John Anderson has a whole museum devoted to his 40 years of taking ocean trash off Washington State beaches; and from Lake Tahoe, a day in the life of a “Wildland” firefighter.

QUIZ

C: 27,000

One Small Step for You

One giant leap for planetkind

Recycled TP

Before you freak out: When we talk about recycled toilet paper, we don’t mean used toilet paper being repurposed. Buying (and using!) TP made from 100% post-consumer recycled paper can help preserve Canada’s boreal forest, which is the most carbon-dense terrestrial ecosystem in the world. Don’t twitch: Make the switch. It’s a simple thing with a big impact, just the kind of eco-action we love!

MR FIX-IT: Get more life out of your stuff

We complained to our friend Mr. Fix-it that our dang faucet won’t stop dripping, wasting water and driving us nuts. “An easy fix,” he insisted. And soon enough, he dripped, errr, dropped this video. A leaky faucet can waste more than 3,000 gallons a year so it's a good time to tackle those taps.

Flint, Michigan had a water problem, and soon enough, millions of empty water bottles. So Ali Rose VanOverbeke decided to make sunglasses out of discarded plastic bottles. It's a solution to the excess plastic that's, dare we say, made in the shade.

Favorite Things

There are three full weeks left to beach-reading season.
Here are a couple of Bluedot staff “eco-reads” favorites:

Family of Origin Digital projects assistant Julia Cooper calls this a “heartwarming and engaging read about family, loss, nature, and progress.”

Digital Projects Consultant Ray Pearce loved the James Beard award winner Eat Like a Fish: “ … a longtime commercial fisherman starts an oyster farm and evolves into one of the leaders in Regenerative Ocean Farming.”

And here are more eco-reads.
