Dear Reader,

While Dot remains aghast at the energy consumption required by AI, it is true that AI can do some things that are a net positive for Mother Earth. Such as, alert ship captains when whales are in their path. “WhaleSpotter, an artificial intelligence-powered whale detection system … aims to transmit real-time alerts to ships to prevent them from colliding with whales — a threat that leads to the injury or death of thousands of whales each year,” reads a story in BioGraphic.

Led by a biophysicist at the storied Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute in Massachusetts, “the global WhaleSpotter network made more than 51,000 marine mammal detections in 2024, up from just 78 [in 2019].”

Though it’s mostly small- and medium-sized ships that have signed up for the 24/7 alerts, researchers are hopeful that large ships will be onboard, as strikes from container ships are one of the leading causes of whale mortality.

But, as Daniel Zitterbart, the biophysicist leading the initiative, puts it, “Every single whale that is not struck because of the technology is a success.”

Alertly,

Dot
