Knitting Nannas

Dear Reader,

Dot’s Nana was not a knitter. Nor a crocheter, a sewer, or a needlepointer. She did, however, love Australia, home of the Knitting Nannas, an activist group focused on climate issues. Reminiscent of the Rocking Chair Rebellion, these Knitting Nannas don bright yellow shirts and pull up chairs to protest at rallies, fossil fuel facilities, politicians’ offices, and other sites where they can take out their yarn and needles and get to work. They call it a β€œmild-mannered yet stubborn front.” But mild-mannered doesn’t mean ineffective. The Nannas, for instance, successfully fought to overturn a law criminalizing protest near train stations or ports.

Let’s give the Knitting Nannas a loud cheer for refusing to go gently into that good night, and instead fighting for the future that the β€œkiddies,” as they refer to them, deserve.

Mild-mannered yet stubbornly,

Dot
